How to Reactivate Lapsed BJJ Members Without Sounding Desperate

A respectful, practical reactivation system for BJJ academies that starts with member context rather than discount blasts.

Reactivation is not a mass-discount campaign. It is a chance to reopen a relationship with someone who already knows your academy.

Segment before you message

Not every inactive member needs the same message. Start with simple groups:

  • people who finished a trial but never joined;
  • members who paused recently;
  • former regulars absent for several months;
  • people whose payment failed but who still attend.

The right next step is different for each group.

Use a human reason to reconnect

A useful message references something real: a new beginner block, a class time that may suit them, an upcoming open mat, or a coach who remembers them. It should make returning easy, not create guilt.

For example: “Hi Alex, we have started a new fundamentals block on Tuesday evenings. You trained with us last spring — would you like a simple link to book your return session?”

Remove the operational friction

Give one clear action: book a class, restart a membership or reply to the coach. If returning requires filling in the same data again or negotiating a timetable over several messages, people will postpone it.

Learn from cancellations

Record a lightweight cancellation reason when possible: schedule, relocation, price, injury, motivation or another activity. Over time it shows what the academy can improve and which departures are naturally temporary.

Kombat Evolve gives academy owners the membership status and attendance context needed to make reactivation personal rather than generic. Request a walkthrough.
